The ‘Alaskan Malamute’ dog originates from the North West coast of Alaska and is the largest, of the sled dog breeds. They are very much a pack-oriented dog with a strong survival and hunting instinct and an independent, dominant, highly intuitive and sometimes wilful, character.

They are extremely intelligent and have amazing strength and endurance and are capable of great loyalty and affection. They are not guard dogs but are territorial in what they regard as their food and space.

With correct training and socialisation a Malamute can be an ideal companion, but the original function, and survival instinct of the breed should be remembered.
