Owning an Alaskan Malamute dog is not a decision to be taken lightly and they are not a breed that are suitable for all people to own. They can be very dominant, even as puppies. Malamutes are large and powerful and, like any dog, they deserve to be treated with respect and handled accordingly. As with all large dogs young children should be supervised and taught mutual respect.
Early socialisation training is recommended to ensure that they will grow into a well adjusted adult. Training a Malamute should be done with patience and reward; aggressive training methods will not work. Adult Malamute's need plenty of good quality exercise and play, and need early lead training as their natural instinct is to pull Both adults and puppies need lots of stimulation. Puppies should not be over exercised as these are large dogs being physically slow to mature.
The Alaskan Malamute will moult twice a year and will need regular grooming all year round to keep their coat in good condition, having a thick woolly undercoat and a longer, harsh guard coat
Malamutes like to dig! This behaviour of stamping and digging is observed in polar bear and may have come from Arctic survival. Next time you watch a program on a polar bear hunting seal, take note!
